Topher's 3⅓ birthday party!

Topher in his BFC cuts
When he was two years old little Christopher "Topher" Hastings was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma cancer in his liver. Doctors begain chemotheraphy and then on April 28th, 2010, surgeons successfully removed the tumor taking 70% of his liver (which is alright because the liver regenerates itself). He then had two more rounds of chemo and the family believed that the ordeal was over.

At the end of his treatment, follow-up appointments and scans revealed that the cancer had spread to his lungs, and that in fact he had multiple tumors in both lungs. The hospital doctors then sat down with Topher's parents and discussed starting him on an experimental chemo regimen that was shortly followed by a trial chemo drug. At the end of these treatments scans showed that the tumors were still growing so little Topher was sent home to be with his family.

Recently he began taking an oral chemo drug but results on November 17th revealed that his tumors had grown by 25% and the family was told there was nothing else the doctors could do except look for a new trial drug.

A couple weeks ago, just out of the blue, Topher said that he'd like to have a birthday party (they never had time to a real one for him in July), so his parents put together a 3⅓ birthday party for him. Bikers Fighting Cancer's North Sound chapter heard about the birthday party, and decided to hold their monthly meeting at the same location; to join in on the festivities. In fact, North Sound chapter awarded little Topher with a BFC vest (cuts) making him our youngest member.

We all had cake with friends & family having a great time, and Topher's older brother Leslie was also awarded BFC cuts because he was bravely supporting his little brother in his journey.

Sarah & Les, Topher's parents, recently posted on the CaringBridge journal pages (available to families dealing with their child's cancer) that Children's Hospital was going to continue giving Topher the oral chemo treatment while searching for a new trial drug.
